奈克松油田开采深海油田遭到环保界的一致否定，于是克莉丝汀 吉婷斯和他助手摄影师杰克一起去采访该油田负责人彼得 贝瑞雪。期间他们在检查海底吸管的时候意外的发现了史前才有的生物。一日，他们乘坐升降器在海底观测，而潜艇驾驶员麦姿则驾驶潜艇钻孔探油却掉入了一个奇妙的洞穴之中，里面景色光怪陆离，绚丽异常。然而噩梦却开始了，某夜记者克莉丝汀为一阵震动吵醒，于是和杰克及医师兼安全主任帕克斯、工程师麦金尼、潜水员艾略特共同乘坐升降器到海底观察，而麦姿和葛瑞迪则驾驶潜艇，就在这时一个庞然大物出现了，却是存在于六千五百万年前的史前巨鲨巨齿鲨，在葛瑞迪葬身鱼腹之后众人纷纷逃命，却不想巨齿鲨被震动所吸引，不停撞击下，众人不得不解开升降器铁锁，任其上升到海面，由直升机解救，这时麦姿用潜艇在将他们顶到冰块之上后遭到了鲨鱼的攻击终于还是被吞噬掉了，而麦金尼由于在上升过程中脚受了重伤，行动不便也遭到鲨鱼毒手。艾略特悲痛欲绝，在心爱女友和同伴相继遭鲨鱼残害之后，他决定用炸弹灭杀这条史前狂鲨，于是在帕克斯的帮助下，他驾驶潜艇下到海底与鲨鱼一番大战并同归于尽。
